The main purpose of an ITIN is to provide a means for people who are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN) to pay their taxes. An ITIN can be used by anyone who has federal tax reporting or filing requirements and does not qualify for an SSN. This includes non-resident and resident aliens, as well as their spouses and dependents.

An ITIN does not entitle the holder to work in the United States or provide eligibility for Social Security benefits. It also does not serve as proof of immigration status.

If you need to file a tax return but don’t have an SSN, you can apply for an ITIN by filling out IRS Form W-7 and submitting it, along with your tax return, to the IRS. You will also need to submit documentation that proves your identity and alien status.
